On October 1st, 2025, the CATCO2NVERS project held its Final Event at the National Historical Archive (CSIC) in Madrid, gathering leading researchers, industrial partners, policymakers, and stakeholders to celebrate the project’s achievements and discuss the future of CO₂ utilisation technologies.
Under the theme “From Emissions to Solutions – The CATCO2NVERS Journey”, the event showcased the project’s final results, milestones, and conclusions after more than four years of collaborative research.
Highlights from the Programme
The morning session opened with Michael Schäffer, Project Advisor at the Research Executive Agency (REA), who reflected on the EU’s continued support for innovation in carbon valorisation. Silvia Maltagliati, Policy Officer at the European Commission, followed with insights on upcoming R&I policies shaping the green transition. The consortium then presented key technological advances achieved within CATCO2NVERS:
- Dulce Muñoz (FUNDITEC) introduced the overall project vision and journey.
- Marcos Latorre (PERSEO Biotechnology) detailed the biorefinery approach linking CO₂ capture to circular value chains.
- Mariana Paredinha (AVANTIUM) explained the conversion of CO₂ to Glyoxylic Acid, while Daan van Vliet (Wageningen University) presented innovations in CO₂-to-Lactic Acid processes.
- Eva Maya (CSIC) shared progress on the synthesis of Furandicarboxylic Acid Methyl Ester (FDME), followed by Dulce Muñoz (FUNDITEC) discussing Cyclic Carbonated Fatty Acid Methyl Esters
- David Díez (CARTIF) presenting advances in Bio-Methanol production.
The final technical block featured Aslı Özge Avcı Tuna (EVYAP) and Patrizio Salice (NOVAMONT), who demonstrated end-user applications of CATCO2NVERS technologies in the cosmetics and bioplastics sectors, linking scientific innovation to market opportunities.
Engaging Stakeholders and Building the Future
The afternoon was devoted to interactive discussions with stakeholders on policy implications, industrial scalability, and replicability across Europe’s bio-based industries. The session concluded with a wrap-up led by the coordination team, highlighting CATCO2NVERS’ legacy in accelerating the transition towards sustainable CO₂ utilisation.
